Fifty years of filter coffee

Vensons has been roasting, grinding and blending coffee in Davangere since 1975. The blend has not changed much, and neither has the reason people keep coming back.

A Davangere shop, first and last

Everything Vensons sells is made here. Green beans are roasted and ground at our own works on 106/6, K.R. Road, then blended with chicory in the proportion South India has always preferred — eighty parts coffee to twenty parts chicory — and packed the same week.

That ratio is not a cost-saving measure. Chicory rounds out the cup, holds the decoction together as it drips, and gives filter coffee the body that milk and sugar sit against. Get it wrong and the cup is either thin or bitter. Fifty years is a long time to spend getting it right.

Ground for the filter

Our grind is cut for the traditional stainless steel South Indian filter, not for a machine. It is fine enough to give up its flavour to boiling water in about ten minutes, and coarse enough that the decoction runs clear rather than stalling in the upper chamber.

If you have never used one, the method is on the back of every pack, and we have written it out in the journal too.

Two shops, one counter

The K.R. Road shop has been serving Davangere for decades. Our second outlet on Taluk Office Road opens this September, in the Channagiri Virupakshappa Complex opposite the Telephone Office. Same blend, same grind, same counter service.
